Maroubra is Sydney's second-largest city beach (the largest is Bondi). It is a famous surfing beach, and has hosted international surf competitions. You can view the surf conditions in real time through the web cam at www.coastalwatch.com >New South Wales > Maroubra. See also BraSurf.com.au.
In February 1960 Randwick councillors tried to impose restrictions on surfboard riding at Maroubra, after banning their use at Clovelly beach. Fortunately good sense prevailed.
In 2006 Maroubra became the second Australian beach to be named a National Surfing Reserve. (The first was Bells Beach in Victoria, in 1973.
Maroubra is within 8km of 10 different golf courses, 5 minutes away from Coogee Beach, and 10 minutes away from the Botany Bay National Park. Westfield Bondi Junction – the biggest shopping mall in the Southern Hemisphere – is only 15 minutes by car, or a short bus ride from the Sands Hotel (Route 317). We are the only accommodation close to Little Bay, Long Bay and La Perouse.
The Botany Bay National Park covers 135 hectares from La Perouse to Cape Banks. There are 4 bush walks that we highly recommend, if you have some time to explore the area:
Maroubra to Coogee Coastal Walkway - a stunning 5km coastal walk from Maroubra Beach to Coogee Beach. Ask for a map at reception.
Henry Head Walking Track – a 5km walk offering views of Botany Bay and early military fortifications.
Jennifer Street Boardwalk – a 350m stroll along a boardwalk with over 100 plant species on view.
Coast Hospital Cemetery – contains 2000 burial sites, some dating back to the 1860s.
Congwong Beach – a great place to see native seabirds such as terns, shearwaters, or even sea eagles.
